-- Noah's Ark The group divides in two parallel lines facing each other across the room (perhaps boys/girls but doesn't matter). Each person is assigned an animal whose match is across the room somewhere. After being given a moment of thought, everyone in the room acts like the assigned animal and walks (crawls, flaps, waddles, etc) across the room in search of their mate. No human language is allowed. When people think they have discovered their mate, the go to the referee. The pandemonium proceeds until everyone has been mated.
To help with the assignment of animals perhaps you could make two sets of animal cards to pass out to people. In this case, the people wouldn't need to be in parallel lines across from each other. They could just be in a big circle or anywhere in the room. The Corny Game Kids kneel on a chair and drop pieces of candy corn, one at a time, into a glass on the floor. The person who gets the most corn in the glass wins! What you need is a couple of bags of candy corn, a chair, and a small glass. What you need to do: Very little! Just set it up and folks will have fun!
The Hanging Tree Have fun trying to find the green apple! What you need: 13 Apples (12 red and one green), String, Blindfold, and a Tree Branch.
What you need to do is wrap the string around each apple. Tie the apples to the tree branch loosely (so you can move them around after each round). Take a child and tell them to close their eyes and make a wish. As they do you blindfold them. Once blindfolded you spin them around and say this rhyme with them: 13 Apples hanging from a tree. 12 dark red and one bright green. Blindfolded, spun around, and then set free. Is that green one meant for me? Point the child in the right direction. They then will stumble about and pick an apple. If they get the green one their wish will come true!
Pass the Mini Pumpkin Don't use your hands! Line up in teams. The first person in each team is given a mini pumpkin to place under his chin. He must pass the orange to the next in line but neither may use his hands. The first team to get the orange all the way to the last person is the winner. If the mini pumpkin drops, just pick it up and continue from there.
The Name Game This is a warm-up, get to know you game for kids through adults. All you need is 3x 5 cards, Marking Pen (Medium or wide point), and safety Pins. Before the Party, print neatly the name of a person or Character associated with Halloween onto a 3x5 card. Use a different name on each card. Make up enough cards for more than each person invited to the party, especially for kids. This can be such a fun game that people want to play it more than once. Upon arriving, use a safety pin to put one card on each guests' back. Do not tell them who is on the card. To guess who "you" are, the name on your back.
You can ask only one question of a guest, before moving to another guest to ask a question. Only "Yes" and "No" answers can be given. Laughing, facial expressions, etc are certainly allowed. Look for questions which will quickly narrow the quest such as: Am I a male (or female)? Am I a real person (versus fictional character)? If a guest guesses too quickly, give them another tag.
Tip: As the host, you may find certain "personalities" among your guests that cause you
Ghost-Centration To guess pairs of hidden objects. Like the "Concentration " game. Take twelve post-it notes.
Using a crayon or marker, number each post -it note from one to twelve on the front, non-sticky side. On the other side, put on two cars each the words: Ghost, Pumpkin, Witches, Goblins, Treats and scarecrows. Make sure each pair not in numerical order. You can make up any pairs of names you want. Put the post-its on a wall in two or three rows in numerical order.
Each player takes a turn asking for two numbers to be turned over. If there is a match, the player wins a piece of candy. The play goes on to the next player whether or not a match is made.
Pumpkin Golf Hit the golf ball into a pumpkin. Carve out a pumpkin. Make the mouth extra large. Build a cardboard ramp about one to two feet side from the ground to the bottom of the pumpkin's mouth. You will probably need some support under the cardboard. Tape the ramp to the floor for stability. Mark a starting point a few feet from the start of the ramp. The older the kids, the farther away. Each player gets to hit a golf ball three times. Each time the ball goes into the pumpkin, the player wins a piece of candy.
Halloween Murder All the participants form a circle. The lights are now turned off. Everyone now closes their eyes; one person ( who will not be participating in the first round of the game) will walk around the circle and gently tap a person of their choice on the head/shoulder/etc. No one is to know who that person is. Now the lights are turned back on, and all rise. All exchange hand shakes; but the person who was tapped will take their index finger and scratch the person who is (hand shaking) on the palm. The person who was scratched is to count to ten so that the person who scratched them has moved. After ten seconds the person who was scratched falls to the floor acting as though he/she have been killed. Now the group is able to guess who did it at any time. When the person who was it has been revealed the lights are once again turned down and that person taps a new person to be it.
A New Kind of Bobbin I've a game that's certain to bring lots of laughs. You've heard of bobbing for apples, right? Well, instead of apples, get a larger tub and bob for Spam. That's right, Spam. It's much more fun because Spam sinks and by the time you get to the last few people the water is slimy and gross and the Spam is starting to fall apart. Teenagers love this game!
Murder in the Dark There is a very fun game that you can play with kids from the ages 7-13 with five or more people. You need a deck of cards. Remove an one card for each person, but there must be only one ace, one jack, and one queen. The rest of the cards may be any number. Shuffle the cards you have removed and pass one out to each person. The person who gets the ace is the detective, and they must leave the room for awhile. The person who gets the jack is the murderer, and the person with the queen is the victim. All other persons are innocent bystanders. The players that are remaining in the room after the detective leaves must talk quietly to figure out who has the jack and queen. The murderer "kills" the victim, and the victim must scream. The victim's scream is the cue for the detective to enter. The detective must ask each person to tell about their alibi, including the murderer. The detective must ask each person twice, and the second time around the murderer must change one word in their story. For example, the murderer might say, "I was walking my dog," the first time. The second time they might say, "I was walking with my dog." The detective must try to figure out who the murderer is, and if they guess right, the detective wins. If they don't guess right, the murderer wins.
Pumpkin Pictures I take Polaroid pictures of each child making the "scariest Halloween face" possible and put into a pumpkin frame (made from orange poster board and shaped like a pumpkin with a hole in the middle for the picture to show through) with the date and the classroom...such as 3rd Grade-1999. Place a magnet on back for the child's refrigerator. What a hoot to see the funny faces all year long in the kitchen. I use this idea also for valentine parties but take a crown for the kids to wear and write on the frame..."King of Hearts" or "Queen of Hearts" along with the grade and date such as 3rd Grade-1999.
Pumpkin Head Kind of similar to carrying an egg in a spoon, you get medium sized pumpkins (larger or smaller depending on the size of the people). Each person puts a pumpkin on his or her head and when the whistle is blown, you walk (or run if you can) toward the finish line. Whoever makes it there first without their pumpkin falling off their head wins. If the pumpkin falls off even once, the person is disqualified.
Cake, Carved Pumpkin, Cookie or Cupcake Walk This needs to be done in a large room.. Put numbers or shapes on the floor, in a huge circle or oval. Ask everyone ahead of time not to scoot across these as it will dislodge them. (you will have to tape or glue to floor) Then put the same shapes or numbers in a bowl. Have everyone line up in a long line and start playing music and have them walk until music stops. The one on or nearest the number or symbol that you pull out of the bowl wins the homemade cake, cookies, cupcakes or decorated pumpkin
Note: You can use a homemade cake, decorated cupcakes and let them win 2 or 3 at a time, already on a plate and wrapped w/ Saran Wrap...you can use homemade cookies and allow them to win 6 already on a plate and wrapped w/ Saran Wrap. You can carve out the pumpkins ahead of time, so that the pumpkin they win is special. Or you can do all four and just line the prizes up on the table and let the guests pick and choose which they want! Have a big plate of cookies available so that if the winners want to continue to play, they can win a single cookie. This keeps everyone involved and playing and lets more win a big prize! And this keeps the game going a little longer! But make sure that the cakes, cookies or cupcakes that you allow them to win are homemade... this just makes the game more special! ...People of ALL ages loved this game at out former church......they wouldn't play any game until this one started then they all got excited and wanted to join in!
Creamy Game Have cool whip or whipped cream. (I prefer cool whip cause there is more in a can.) put a paper plate down for each participant. Then put a piece of bubble gum in the middle of the plate, put cool whip in a big pile over the gum. This can be played between 2-4 people. Tell them to start, the first one to blow a bubble wins. Hand out prizes.
MARSHMALLOW STRAW CONTEST The kids in my classes hate getting their faces wet. They are first graders so we came up with our own version of apple dunking. We took a small bucket with ice water in it and floated full size marshmallows in it. Then each child was given a straw cut in half. (Shorter straws are easier to suck and hold the marshmallow) Then we have a contest to see who could get the marshmallow picked up in the shortest amount of time. We do this with 5 kids at a time as to not have to many kids at once trying to catch the marshmallows. They are allowed to eat the marshmallow when they capture it.
Orange in the pantyhose relay race You will need 4 oranges and 2 pairs of pantyhose. Split everyone into 2 teams with half of each team at opposite ends of the room *place an orange in the toe of one leg of the pantyhose *Tie the other leg around your waist in such a way that the orange is hanging just above floor level between your legs *place another orange on the floor in front of you *Move your body so that the orange in the pantyhose is swinging to hit the orange on the floor.
*you must keep your hands clasped behind your waist *the two starters must get their orange across the room and hand off their pantyhose to the next team member.
Murder In The Dark You need at least 6 people for this game, but no more than 10. You need a deck of playing cards. You need one King, two Jacks, and take how many people you have and subtract 4 and that is how many number cards you need (a number card is 2-10). One person is the narrator. The narrator passes out the cards, if you get the king you are the murderer, if you get one of the two jacks you are a police man, if you get a number card you are a villager.
Every body puts there head down on a pillow. The narrator says murderer, the murderer raises his/her head. the narrator says policemen, they raise there head. the narrator says murderer murder. the murderer raises his/her head and points to some one. the narrator says everybody, every one raises there head, and the narrator tells the person who was murdered that they are dead, that person reveals if they are a police man or a villager. then they put there heads down again and the steps above are repeated. if the murderer kills both police man then the murderer wins. but if the police man convict him they win.
"Murder" (or "Wink") One player is secretly designated the "murderer". This can be done by drawing lots: each player draws a piece of paper from a hat. They are all marked "victim" except for one marked "murderer". Prepare only enough for the number of players. Alternatively, the host can secretly tap one player to be the "murderer".
All players must sit in a circle and be able to see each participant's face easily. The murderer tries to "kill" the other players by winking at them. If a player is winked at, he or she must die (as dramatically as possible, of course!. Encourage theatrics!)
A warning to the murderer: wink discreetly. A player who witnesses the crime (and is not yet killed off) can become a "witness". This player shouts "Witness!" and names the killer. If the witness is right, he or she is a winner, and a new round starts. If the witness is wrong, however, that person also dies. A player who has a hunch about the killer, may shout "Detective!" and guess the murderer's identity. Beware! A wrong hunch results in that player also dying. The murderer wins if all but one "victim" is killed off. Note: "Victims" are forbidden to wink!
Pumpkin Bowling Knock over the bowling pins. Make a strike or a spare. Select several small pumpkins about four to six inches in diameter. You need extras in case a few split or break. Place plastic liter soda bottles as bowling pins several feet away on the lawn or floor of the room.
Suggestion: Let the kids decorate the soda bottles with Halloween objects before the game.
Measure off several feet. Give each child two tries to knock down the pins. I strike is worth two pieces of candy. A spare is worth one piece of candy.
Penny Pitch To pitch a penny into a pumpkin. Method #1: Carve out a pumpkin (or two, or three) and line the inside with plastic or aluminum foil. Make the top opening big. Method: #2: Use several small plastic pumpkins (less messy.)
Place the pumpkins a couple feet away. Give each player ten to twenty pennies. Every time a penny goes into the pumpkin, a piece of candy is won.
Pumpkin Ring Toss To toss a ring around a pumpkin. Carve out a one to three pumpkins. Buy or make three or four rings about twice as big around as the pumpkins. If you don't know what to use, try an extra piece of leftover electrical cable and tape together with duct tape. (Scouts use this as a "Reduce, re-use and re-cycle" project.)
Measure back several feet, depending on age group. Give the rings to the player. A piece of candy (or two) is awarded for ringing the pumpkin. You can award one piece of candy for a partial ring and two if the ring is completely around.
Tic-Tac Ghost Get three O's or X's in a row. Use a "Toss Across" game. Tape pieces of candy or small prizes on some of the O's and X's. You can use a paper note stating the prize. Sometimes the prizes are too big to put on the game.
Each player gets five or six bean bags. Toss the bean bags at the game. There are two ways to win. Win a prize by getting three O's or X's. If the player turns over a prize, they win that prize.
Pumpkin Men Well, at Christmas everyone in the family can go out and make snowmen, right? Well, a nice Halloween family activity could be to make a pumpkin man. Just take three or more pumpkins, and make a snowman like figure. The one with the face on top, the body in the middle (maybe make holes like "buttons" for a shirt), and the bottom could be adorn with painted on "boots".
Pumpkin Races Yes, pumpkins again. This time, build ramps and roll the pumpkin down the ramp (the bigger the ramp the better) and race against a friend on the other side of the ramp. Winner gets to shove a handful of pumpkin seeds in the losers face (though the punishment can be changed to whatever you want). Pumpkins can be shaved so that they roll better and faster. Do not use road hills for ramps in this game.
Candy Balloon Relay Put a small piece of candy in a balloon and blow it up. Divide the group into two teams and line them up to race. The first person in line runs down to the bale of straw or hay and picks up a balloon. Then that person places it on the bale and sits on it to pop it. If they're a lightweight they may have to bounce on it to get it to pop. When popped, grab the candy and run back so the next person can do it. The first team done wins.
Ghost Bingo Make Bingo cards with the letters GHOST instead of BINGO at the top. Leave the squares that the numbers would be in blank. Buy some small Halloween stickers that have 6 different objects (e.g. one sticker has a black cat, another has a bat etc.) on each sheet (make sure you have a sheet for each child). Take two small cardboard boxes and cover with freezer paper (or other type of white paper); these will be the dice. On the one put one letter in the word GHOST on each side of the box (you will have an extra side which you can leave blank or put an extra T). Cover with contact paper. On the other die draw a picture of each of the objects on the stickers on each side of the box. Cover with contact paper. Give each child a GHOST card and a sheet of stickers to make their own card. There is a "free" space in the middle and they can put the stickers in any box (some children can put as many objects in a row they want e.g. there may be 3 cats under the G, that's OK). Then roll the dice, if "G" "bat" comes up, the kids with a bat sticker under the G can cover it up (only cover up one bat). Keep rolling until someone yells "GHOST". Make sure you have someone keeping track of what is rolled so the cards can be checked.
Spider Web In an enclosed area, take numerous, separate and very long pieces of yarn to create a giant spider web. Put a piece of tape on the beginning of each piece and tie a number to the end. Cris cross the pieces of yarn throughout the room to create a "web." Each child grabs a taped end of yarn and rolls it up until the end is found. Each number corresponds to a special prize or treat. The kids will have fun working there way through the web and trying to stay untangled.
Yarn Spider Web Game Roll up a small ball of black yarn, one for each child, the size of a golf ball. Have the children stand in a circle holding their ball. A parent or helper can then tie the yarn around each child's waist and give that child the rest of the ball to hold. Each child, taking turns around the circle, tosses the ball of yarn to someone across from him. That child then wraps the yarn once around him and tosses it to another child and so on and so on. When they are done tossing and wrapping they must now get themselves out of the spider web they have made.
JACK-O-LANTERN This is a game for 2 to 4 players ages 6 and up. You will need a piece of paper and a pencil for each player. You also need 1 die. The object of this game is to complete a drawing of a jack-o-lantern before the other players do.
Players roll the die to see who starts. The player with the highest number goes first. You must roll the exact number to draw each item. Each item must be drawn in order. If you can not draw what you have rolled, the turn passes to the next player. (For a faster game, or for younger players, you can draw the items in any order).
Roll a 1.....draw a circle for the pumpkin Roll a 2.....draw the stem Roll a 3.....draw one eye Roll a 4.....draw the other eye Roll a 5.....draw the nose Roll a 6.....draw the mouth
A variation on this game, for older players, is to carve the pumpkin instead of drawing it. In that case, the player would roll a 1 to scoop out his pumpkin.
Musical Graves Use spooky Halloween sounds for the music. Cut out tombstone shapes from construction paper. Decorate these with sayings such as "Rest in Peace", and "Here lies a Good Man", and so on. Each player needs a tombstone. Place the tombstones in a circle. Each player lies down with his head on the tombstone and his feet facing out of the circle. When the music starts, everyone stands up and walks like a zombie around the circle. While they are walking, remove one tombstone. When the music stops, the players must lie down again with their head on a tombstone. The player without a grave is out. Repeat the game until only one player remains.
Candy Toss Okay, this one is simple, it's something like horseshoes. Take any piece of candy that you got trick-or-treating, and try to throw it into a circle of a 20 centimeter diameter. Put another circle of 10 cm diameter inside the first one. 1 point for the outer circle, 2 points for the inner. Winner gets all the candy! Use any candy you want, see what does best.
Scary Stories Tell a chilling tale or two. Sit around in a circle in a dark room, with a flashlight in the middle of the circle. We do not recommend candles as it can be dangerous with the kids. One player starts the game by saying "Once there was......" and makes one or two sentences. It should relate to and build upon what was previously said. The next person to the right then adds to the story a couple of sentences. Go around the room at least once. Try to make the stories scary or gross.
Tips and Ideas, start with: Once there was an old man walking through the graveyard....... Once there was an old lady who look so much like a witch......... Once there was a shadow................. Once there was an eerie sound that was like...........
Pumpkin Bocce Object of Game: Roll a pumpkin closest to the big pumpkin. Carve out a large pumpkin. Buy several miniature or round sugar pumpkins. Place the big, carved out pumpkin several feet away. Give each player a small pumpkin. Each player rolls (No tossing or throwing) their pumpkin and tries to be the closest to the big pumpkin. The player closest wins a prize or piece of candy.
Push the Peanut A mighty slow race! Give each racer a toothpick and a peanut (in the shell). Their job is to use the toothpick to push and roll the peanut from the starting line to the finish line. This can be played on the floor or on a table. On the floor or carpet, you can mark the starting and finish lines with masking tape. On a table just go from one end to the other.
Note: With younger children, you may want to use a cocktail straw instead of the toothpick to avoid any possible injuries during all the excitement.
Peanut Sipper The peanuts should be in their shells. Give each player a drinking straw and a paper cup. Everyone gathers around a pile of peanuts. Each then sucks through her straw to move peanuts from the pile into her cup. Set a timer for one minute -- the winner is the one with the most peanuts in her cup when the timer rings.
Another way to play is to put 5 peanuts for each player in the center pile (4 players would use 20 peanuts) and everyone keeps sipping until all the peanuts have been removed to someone's cup. Then everyone gets to eat all they sipped.
Younger children may find it easier to "sip" plastic packing peanuts which can be exchanged for the real thing for eating.
Reverse Treat Game! Kids caught saying certain "magic words" give away a piece of candy in a bag they are given at the start of the evening. The person with the most candy remaining at the end of the evening is the winner.
A small bag with each person's name written on it, 10 pieces of candy for each person's bag, and a list of the "magic words" to hang up for all to see
Write each guest's name on a bag. Put 10 pieces of candy in each bag. Make the list of magic words: GHOST, PUMPKIN, WITCH, CANDY, HALLOWEEN. Hang up the list in a place everyone can see it. Set a specific time for the game to end. If someone is caught saying one of the words on the list, the one who says the word must give the first one who hears it a piece of candy from their bag. The person with the most candy when the time is up wins.
Air Balloons Use black and orange balloons. Get into a circle and start the balloon going around from player to player keeping the balloon in the air at all times. The youngest will enjoy seeing if they can keep the balloon moving for the time it takes to sing a song or listen to a piece of music.
Older guests can try this variation. Before he can bat the balloon each player must call out a word (no repetitions, please) to fit an agreed upon theme. The theme could be Halloween words, kinds of Halloween treats, creepy creatures, or... well, you get the idea. And don't be too particular. If I yell "ladybug" in time to bat the balloon, it counts as a creepy creature!
We used to play this in school with the multiplication tables. We had to go in order (first kid, 2x2=4; next kid 2x3=6; etc.) and I was always so busy trying to figure out what it would be when the balloon got to me that I often missed completely!
Graveyard Game How still can you be? The last person left wins!
Choose one person to be the grave keeper. The grave keeper closes his/her eyes and counts to ten while everyone else gets into a good frozen position and stands very still. The grave keeper then walks around looking for anyone who moves. If the grave keeper catches you moving (breathing doesn't count), you are out. You can move positions when the grave keeper's back is turned but don't get caught moving. The last person left is the winner and can be the new grave keeper if you choose to play another round. Witches Broomstick Game A musical game, but you can play and just "say" the chant. It goes like this:
Pass the witches' broom stick all around the room, while the music's playing quickly pass the broom, anyone is out who lets the broomstick drop, or the one who has it when the music stops!
The children stand in a circle, and while they say the chant a broomstick is passed very quickly around the circle. If the broomstick is dropped that person is out, and whoever has the broomstick on the word out at the end of the chant is out. You can either send the person is out to the middle of the circle for just the next round of the game, or you play elimination until only one person is left. The kids absolutely LOVE this game!!
Autopsy This is a game for slightly older kids but the younger ones usually join in once they see the older ones laughing.
We make an outline of a body on the ground and place various fruits and veggies within the outline to simulate body parts. We then place a very large black plastic bag over the outline and cut hand-size holes in it to allow the kids to feel the "body parts". You can use almost anything for the parts. We generally use cauliflower for the brain, a peeled tomato for the heart, cooked cold spaghetti for the guts, carrots and celery for bones, olives for eyes, etc.
Musical Ghost Decorate a sock as a ghost or some other spooky Halloween creature. Fill it with candy and/or little treats. Have everyone sit in a circle and pass around the sock until the music stops. Whoever has the sock when the music stops is out. The last person remaining gets the sock with the treats inside or another prize.
Spoon Game This is great for Halloween parties for older kids I do it with adults. It is similar to blind man bluff. You blindfold one person and put a wooden spoon in each of his/hers hands. Then spin the person around a few times while everyone moves about the room. Then everyone must freeze. The blindfolded person then tries to find someone. When he does he then feels the shape of the person who is caught using only the spoons. This is very hard but having costumes on help cause you may feel a hat or can tell the person has on a long cape, etc. It is quite funny as the person with the spoons has no idea where he or she might be poking the person. The person has three (3) guesses to figure out who he has caught. If he guesses right, then the other person is IT.
Creepy Ice My name is Nicole and I am 13. I always have Halloween parties and one idea I use is to get empty ice cube trays and put in gummy worms or other creepy gummies. Put water in, freeze and you have ice cubes with a sweet treat inside for that Halloween punch bowl, or cool drink.
Pumpkin Patch If you are not able to obtain pumpkins for a pumpkin patch, then make your own out of round paper plates. You can either glue orange paper or cut orange construction paper. Use 1" by 1/2" pegs to secure them into the ground. You can also draw or paint faces on each pumpkin.
Scarecrow This game is composed of teams. Each team has to choose one person to be the scarecrow or person to decorate. Each team will have a bag of old clothes (shirt, overalls, gloves, oversized boots or shoes, hat, etc). As a relay, each person takes a turn reaching into a bag filled with old clothes choosing one item. He or she then runs it down the scarecrow being decorated. As soon as the scarecrow has the article of clothing completely on, that person runs back to tag the next person to grab in the bag to decorate the scarecrow. The first team to have all the articles of clothing on the scarecrow is the winner.
Witch's Brew This is a fun game and could be gross. Get five (5) different kinds drinks and seventeen (17) different pieces of food, (raisins, OREO cookies, etc.) Then you first need to decide who goes first and blindfold him/her. Spin them around three times.
They are going to choose 2 drinks and 3 pieces of food with the blind fold on. The other people put the items into a cup. When the person is done un-blind fold them. THEN LET HIM/HER TASTE THEIR CREATION!
Halloween Blindfold Bluff This is great for Halloween parties for older kids or adults. It is similar to blind man bluff, you blindfold one person and put a wooden spoon in each of his/her hands. Spin the person around a few times while everyone moves about the room. Then everyone must freeze. The blindfolded person then tries to find someone. When he does he then feels the shape of the person who is caught using only the spoons. This is very hard but having costumes on helps because you may feel a hat or can tell the person has on a long cape etc.. It is quite funny as the person with the spoons has no idea where he or she might be poking the person. IT has three (3) guesses to figure out who he has caught. If IT is correct than the discovered person is now the blindfolded one!
Crazy Sew! This is so much fun. Here is what you have to do to play the game: First get a pumpkin or any hard veggie like a carrot or a fruit. You must have about five people in each team. Everyone gets the veggie or fruit of their choice! (tip: never use tomatoes, but bananas are the best!) Then each team is given a sewing needle and a piece of thread and they have to sew a perfectly straight line with the needle. When the first group that is done they say "Veggie Eater!" That is how you play crazy sew! Also if you mess up you are out of the game! Thank you for reading my game and I hope you think it is fun!
Halloween Cake Walk I like to have games that everyone will win each time the game is played. We play a cake walk game using the colors and shapes that we've been working on, and then throw in some Halloween shapes (or any holiday shape). You have to have as many shape squares as you do "little ones". We tape the shapes squares on the floor in the shape of a circle, and then you have to have those same shapes thrown in a "hat". Start the music and have the little ones start to "travel" around in a circle making sure when the music stops each one is on a square. Then pull out a shape and have the little ones tell you what color and shape it is, and then find out who is standing on it! Whoever is standing on it wins the prize! Then the game starts over until each one has won. Towards the end you have to strategize your music and pulling of shapes making sure everyone wins.
Halloween Words Take the word Halloween and put in on a piece of paper or a big board and display for everyone to see. Have everyone see how many words they can make from the word Halloween, for example hall, all, wheel. Give everyone at least 10 minutes and see "who" can come up with the most words. Give a prize for the most and runner-ups if you'd like. I have found around 80 words.
Rap the Mummy Here's a game that's pretty fun. You need a even number of people and a lot of toilet paper. Get everybody into teams of two. Find out who in every group is going to wrap the mummy. The object of the game is to see who can wrap their partner with toilet paper the fastest. Then after one person is done the person who is wrapped breaks out of the toilet paper and wraps the other person. The first team that raps each other wins!
Wrapped Candies Using a deep pan or tub (the longer the better) place various wrapped candies all over bottom. Cover with cooked spaghetti noodles (color if you like). Each child gets one grab in the slimy stuff! Have wet clothes ready to wipe candy off and plastic bags to put them in.
GUM ON THE NOSE This is a good game for elementary ages; preschoolers will not want to give up their gum!!!
Before the party, on a large piece of poster board (you need room to miss) draw a "life-sized" picture of a witch, with a big nose. Have a large flat area to hang the poster. (I suggest sliding glass doors, because they wash easily.)
At the party, give kids gum, and let them chew for a couple of minutes. Select one child at a time, blind fold, and spin them around. Instruct them to take the gum out of their mouth, and stick it to the end of the witch's nose.
Anyone who gets their gum on the nose, wins. Whoever gets it closest to the tip, gets a special prize. A gag prize is given to whoever misses the furthest. (Don't tell this ahead, there will be gum in your neighbor's yard!)
PUMPKIN PUZZLES We have taken medium size pumpkins, cleaned and carved them, then cut them into puzzle pieces. Then each group is given the pieces to their pumpkin, along with some toothpicks. The first group to reassemble their pumpkin is the winners. If you want the game to go on longer they can rotate to the next pumpkin then race again.
PING PONG PUMPKINS This is a fun group game, but you will need lots of ping pong balls. You will divide your group into two. One side will have pumpkin shaped bowls per person. (Take several of the plastic pumpkin shaped bowls designed to carry on Halloween night to put all of your treats in. Punch two small holes on either side and run a string through that is long enough to tie around your waist.) The other group will not have pumpkins, but the ping pong balls.
Line up across from each other. The trick is to throw as many balls into the pumpkins as you can in two minutes time. The pumpkin People may wiggle their hips, but cannot move their feet or use their hands.
Autographed Costume Instead of purchasing an expensive costume how's about purchasing a plain long or short sleeve white t-shirt or sweater. Carry and assortment of water proof color markers. Then when you go trick-or-treating have the persons at the door autograph their names or write a message!!!
Pass the Parcel We played this game and it can be adapted to suit any kind of party you are having. You get a prize and wrap in newspaper, colored paper, wrapping paper or any other kind you have. You put as many layers of wrapping as you want but you must wrap each layer individually. As you wrap each layer, put a sticker on each layer with instructions for the person to do something silly (best if this thing suits the occasion). To start the game, everyone sits in a circle and one persons has the parcel, one person controls the music. Once the music starts you must pass the parcel around the circle, making sure everyone in the circle gets to pass it on to the next person. Whenever the person controlling the music stops the music, the person who has the parcel must unwrap just one layer, read the instructions and carry it out. It's a lot of fun and you can be very imaginative with it, you can put one that says "pick out a partner and do the Charleston" or "Tell a scary story".
The one on or nearest the number or symbol that you pull out of the bowl wins the homemade cake, cookies, cupcakes or decorated pumpkin.
You can use a homemade cake, decorated cupcakes and let them win 2 or 3 at a time, already on a plate and wrapped w/ Saran Wrap...you can use homemade cookies and allow them to win 6 already on a plate and wrapped w/ Saran Wrap.
A HALLOWEEN MAZE Make a maze with tables chairs blankets etc. You then blind fold on person and have another person lead them through the maze you can use fans, streamers, spaghetti noodles, etc.

Using material as a template draw a pumpkin mouth with teeth. Use the template to trace on construction paper as many mouths as you think you will need. Blindfold the person playing giving them a pumpkin mouth with tape on the back. Then spin him or her around but facing the pumpkin at the end. Have them try to stick the mouth onto the pumpkin where they think it should be. Have a big X marked where it should go.
The person with the mouth closest to the X is the winner.
Reverse Donut Bobbing Tie strings around donuts, enough for each child or person participating in the game, and suspend from the ceiling or a tree branch. You may need to adjust the length of these so they are at least mouth high or lower. Then, instruct everyone they must eat the entire donut and the first to do this wins the game. But, there is one last rule to the game, they can not touch the donut with their hands. The first to get a bite out of the donut, wins. This is really hard to do, but is great fun to watch and capture on film!
"Dem" Bones Relay Race Purchase a plastic Halloween skeleton and disassemble the parts. Hide the parts throughout the room. Team members must run around the room and find all their parts and reassemble their skeleton. This can be done one team at a time, timing each to see who has completed the task in the shortest time frame. Or, teams can compete simultaneously, with each team having their parts of the skeleton hidden in a designated area or quarter of the room. Try this game with glow-in-the-dark skeletons too.
Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin Cut out a large pumpkin face from construction paper. Draw in the face features minus the nose. From a separate piece of construction paper, cut out several different nose shapes. Put a number on the back of each nose.

Use as many or as little as you want. At the call of go the teams must create their own Halloween monster using ALL of the objects. Some teams have even used themselves in this creation. Give out prizes to the teams who finished fastest, the best monster, the scariest monster, the weirdest monster etc.

Everyone needs to take one paper and read it. Every one sits without saying anything. The murderer has to wink at the other people without getting caught. If the people get winked at they have to act dead. The other people have to guess who the murderer is before he can wink at them. You can have prizes for the person who guesses the murderer if you like.
ANOTHER FOOT GAME Use a big aluminum cake. Place 5 or more marbles in the pan. Fill with cooked spaghetti noodles with red food coloring and a little oil. Put several marbles in the pan and have them search for the (eyes) marbles with their feet.
HARVEST DRAW Each child is given a piece of paper and a pencil. If there is not room at a table for each child, each child needs a book or other hard surface to draw on.
Each child is blindfolded or asked to close their eyes. The leader tells the children to draw the eyes of a jack-o-lantern, the round pumpkin part, the nose mouth and then stem. This is not easy with the eyes closed and the results can be very funny.

Broomstick Dance This is a fun way for pre-teens and teens to dance without being so self-conscious. Use slow dance music (have the kids pick it out ahead of time). This game is like musical chairs except that you pass around a broomstick. Everyone is divided into couples on the dance floor. One BOY has the broom. As the music plays and everyone dances the boy with the broom must get rid of it by giving it to another boy. The BOY giving the broom now becomes the new dance partner of the girl. This can go on for as long as you like. We find that both the boys and girls like this! Everyone gets a chance to dance with each other. You can put a twist on this by having the girls be the ones exchanging brooms and partners, too. This is a great way for boys and girls to have a healthy social dance without staying in "couples" the whole time. To put a Halloween twist on this - whenever the music stops whatever boy is holding the broom must have an orange ribbon tied in his hair.
Farmer John Relay Get two large brown grocery bags. In each put a long underwear, pants with elastic suspenders, bright colored bandana, a crazy wig, shirt, corn cob pipe, hat, etc. Divide into two teams. On the word "go" each team must send a person to the bag. The person must then put on everything over the clothes they are presently wearing and model for 10 seconds. Then take everything off and put it back in the bag and run back to their team so that the next team member can run and model.

Everyone then dives into someone else's sleeping bag and covers their faces. Then "it" is called back in. She can then tiggle persons in the sleeping bags to guess who is in it. No jumping or sitting on the persons in the bags. If "it" guesses right, then the that person becomes the next "it." The kids can continue shuffling in and out of bags and disguising their voices.
Guess Who? This is a fun game, but the kids should know each other pretty well by their first and last names. Divide the kids into two teams with one team leader). Have two adults (or two tall students) hold up a dark blanket (or dark bed sheet) between two teams of kids (so that they cannot see each other). Then two kids stand facing each other on opposite sides of the blanket. One the word "drop" the adults drop the blanket. The first person to shout out the first and last name of the person standing in front of them gets a point. The team leader then picks the next opponents when the sheets go back up.
Halloween Bowl Gather four 2-liter plastic bottles. Fill with a little water at the bottom to add some weight. You will use these bottles as bowling pins. Now use a small pumpkin as the bowling ball. Players can roll the pumpkin and see how many bottles they can knock over on each roll. Points awarded to the person who can knock over the most.
BLINDFOLD PUMPKIN DRAW Each child is given a piece of paper and a pencil.
PIN THE NOSE ON THE PUMPKIN Cut out a large pumpkin face from construction paper. Draw in the face features minus the nose. From a separate piece of construction paper, cut out several different nose shapes. Put a number on the back of each nose.

Halloween Caroling Similar to Christmas caroling - take a bunch of kids and go visit a children's ward in a hospital or adults in a hospital or nursing home. You must check with nurses ahead of time. For instance, you could pass out trick-or-treat bags which you may have decorated ahead of time. In the bags you could put different kinds of treats: i.e. crayons, stickers, games, puzzles, balloons, etc. Be sure to check with the hospital as to what is most appropriate in terms of candy and treats. Be sure not to wear scary costumes or medical garb.
Halloween Clothes Grab Bag Gather up all kinds of clothing articles (i.e. hats, baggy shirts and pants, ties, dresses, shoes, etc) and stuff it in a duffle bag or large pillow case. Pass the bag around. Each person must take out one article without looking. Play some music and have everyone walk down modeling their item!

Halloween Ice Toes Use two aluminum cake or pie pans. Place 5 or more marbles in each pan. Cover with equal amounts of ice cubes in each pan. Two players then remove their shoes and socks and race to try and get the marbles out of each pan using only their toes! No spilling ice or knocking over pan. The first to get all the marbles out of the pan wins. You can also make this a relay by having an adult put the marbles back each time. This is funny and the kids are screaming when its cold!
Halloween Toilet Paper Fashion Contest Have two or more teams of players. The object is to design the best looking mummy with a roll or two (or more depending on brand) of toilet paper. Each team picks someone to be the mummy. On the word "go" each team then wraps the person with the toilet paper (adults be sure they do not cover their mouth, nose, or eyes!). Be sure the mummy sticks their hands out in front so their hands do not get wrapped to their bodies. Give them a time limit (5 minutes max) to do this. Take pictures. If you do not want to use toilet paper you can use newspaper (but be aware that everyone's hands gets black!)
Halloween Toe Mural This is a fun activity for younger kids, but it could even be fun for teens, too. Get a large piece of butcher paper (white) for a mural. Instead of finger painting - do "toe" painting with a Halloween theme. Kids must dip their toes and/or feet into pie pans of different color water paints. This should be hilarious. You could even divide up the kids into several groups to have several different murals. Award prizes for creativity, funny, scary, etc.
Halloween Stockings For a twist in sleepovers or a party ask the kids to decorate and wear their own Halloween stockings. You can award prizes for categories such as most original, funny, ugly, etc. Any battery operated lights?
OKOLE CHARADES "Okole" is rear end in Hawaiian. This game is very funny. Play this game in teams like charades, but instead of the team person trying to mime or spell a word out with their hands and faces they must use their rear end to spell out the word Kids (and adults) just love this game because it can be very hilarious. Choose words appropriate to spell out. The first team to shout out the correct word wins a point!
Old Mother Witch Tag Game This is a fun game for a group of 5 - 15 kids. One person is chosen the witch. He or she walks hunched over as everyone else walks behind. They chant in unison:
Old mother witch Couldn't sew a stitch. Picked up a penny, And thought she was rich.
The person who is the witch can stop at any time and ask in a spooky voice, "Are you there, my children?" The group of kids can then either say YES or NO. If they say NO then the witch continues on and the group continues chanting. But if the group says YES, then the witch must turn making spooky sounds and everyone scatters. He or she then runs to tag someone who then becomes the next witch. The game begins again.
Pumpkin Relay Have one pumpkin for every four to five kids. Carve a face into each pumpkin saving the pieces that make up the eyes, nose, and mouth. Mix up these pieces from the different pumpkins in one pile. Have relay teams send one person at a time to obtain one piece to take back to their assigned pumpkin. If the piece of pumpkin they choose fits then the next person on their team can go to the table, otherwise they have to go back and get another piece. Game is over when the first team has all the right parts!
Pumpkin Toss Similar to egg tossing. Use a small pumpkin per two players. The two people toss the pumpkin back and forth to each other, each time stepping back away from each other. The person wins who does not drop the pumpkin.
Straw Face This is a fun to watch 4 - 6 people sitting in chairs facing an audience. Give them each a plastic straw. Facing the audience they put the straws in their mouths holding from the right side. On "go" they must move the straws to its left side by only using their mouths and tongues. This is hilarious with kids making the funniest facial expressions as they move the straws.
Tongue Twisters! See who can say these words fast ten times in a row each without messing up! Bad Blood Toy Boat
What's In It? You will need to fill a large tub with water. Then you gather 2 - 4 volunteers and blindfold them. Then while they are blindfolded you put all kinds of "safe" and "appropriate" articles in it (nothing sharp!) Then one by one they must take each item out and guess what it is by feeling it and identifying it. They leave their blindfolds on until the end of the game. They must pass the item along to the next person until someone can guess what it is. If you want to make a gross joke at the end - throw in a peeled bananas smeared with peanut butter. Yuck! Gross! Take photos of their reactions - and be sure to have paper towels for clean-up.
Witch Hunt First design a witch on a piece of paper as a template (do not make it to big). Trace it onto black construction paper. Cut out 50 or more black witches and then hide them all over your house, classroom, gym, etc. For the party have everyone either individually or in pairs go in search of the witches. Turns off the lights! Make sure everyone or couple has a flashlight. The person or couple returning with the most witches wins.
Balloon Relay This can get noisy! Divide up into teams with one balloon for each team. Half of each team is at opposite ends of the room. The first player of each team must keep the balloon in the air while racing down to the other end. She passes the balloon off to the first player of her team at that end who races back, and passes it off to the next, etc. To be declared the winning team, all members of the team must have successfully raced with the balloon in the air.
The Ghost Game Can you hear a ghost? Choose one person to be the ghost. Everyone else closes their eyes and stands very still, listening for the ghost. The ghost walks around the room, standing behind the silent players. When the ghost is behind someone, the ghost counts slowly (and silently in their mind) to ten. If the person the ghost is behind does not say "is there a ghost behind me?" before the ghost finishes counting, the ghost tells them they are dead and they are out of the game. If that person does in fact say those words then they join the ghost and try to eliminate the rest of the players. If everyone gets eliminated then the ghost wins. Otherwise the last persons who becomes a ghost wins. Pin the Nose on Humphrey A variation of Pin the Tail on the Donkey. First you will need to make the game. Draw and color a large Jack o' lantern on poster board or a large sheet of paper. Give him only a small circle for a nose. Cut out several circles from blue construction paper. These will be Humphrey's nose; that will help you decide how big the circles should be -- don't make them too small. To the back of each circle place some double-sided tape or regular tape you have formed into a small ring with the sticky-side out.
Now let's play. One at a time, each player is blindfolded and given a blue circle, turned around three times, and then turned facing the direction of poor nose-less Humphrey. The player walks forward and still blindfolded places Humphrey's blue nose on the drawing. The one getting the nose closest to where it should be is declared the winner.
Halloween Word Scramble An old parlor game. This simple game can be played individually or in pairs. Give everyone paper and pencil. How many words can be made using only the letters in "Halloween" or "Trick or Treat"?
Cookie Decorating Decorate plain sugar cookies or cupcakes with orange frosting and candies (candy corn, gum drops, green coconut, etc.) to make Jack-o-lanterns or monster faces. Line up the results for all to admire and then... everyone turns into a Cookie Monster and devours them all! Award each a card for "funniest," "scariest," "best use of frosting," "best use of coconut", etc. |
